Is a Gatorade Bottle Bong Bad for You? | The Bong Shop
A homemade Gatorade bottle bong might seem like a quick fix, but drink bottles and improvised parts are not designed to be used as smoking equipment. The clearest concern is using materials that may be heated, damaged or difficult to clean. And whatever the device is made from, inhaling smoke carries health risks.
The short answer: It’s best to avoid using a drink bottle or other improvised materials as a bong. A purpose-made device can avoid some uncertainty about the materials, but it does not make smoking safe.
People often ask whether a Gatorade bong is “bad for you” because it’s made from a plastic bottle. The honest answer is that there is limited research on the health effects of using a specific homemade bottle bong. That means we shouldn’t claim a particular chemical exposure or level of risk without evidence.
There are still sensible reasons to avoid one: the bottle and any added parts may not be made to handle heat or repeated use, their materials may be unknown, and improvised equipment can be harder to keep clean.
Why a drink bottle isn’t made for smoking
A disposable drink bottle is designed to hold a beverage under ordinary conditions. It has not been designed or tested as a smoking device. Cutting, puncturing, crushing or repeatedly reusing it can damage the plastic. If plastic or another component becomes hot, melts or burns, fumes may be produced; the exact fumes depend on the material and conditions.
This does not tell us exactly what someone inhales when using a homemade bottle bong. The materials, construction, heat and use can vary. The practical advice is straightforward: don’t use a device if any part is melting, burning, changing shape or giving off an unusual smell.
What about the hose, foil or other improvised parts?
Homemade setups can include materials such as garden hose, tape, glue, foil or pieces of a can. These products are made for other purposes, and their composition and suitability for repeated heating or inhalation are not always clear. Avoid using any part that is exposed to flame, becomes hot, melts or burns.
Claims that a particular improvised part will release a specific chemical during bong use need evidence for that material and those conditions. If the material is unknown or not made for this purpose, the safer choice is not to use it.
Does bong water make smoking safe?
No. Water may cool smoke, but it does not make inhaling smoke harmless. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that cannabis smoke contains many of the same toxins, irritants and cancer-causing chemicals as tobacco smoke. Smoking cannabis can also affect lung tissue and is associated with cough, mucus production and bronchitis symptoms.
These risks come from the smoke itself. Changing the bottle, pipe or water does not remove them.
Does a used bong need cleaning?
Yes. Water and residue left sitting in a device can become dirty, and shared mouthpieces can pass germs between people. Empty the water after use, clean the device regularly according to its material and care instructions, and avoid sharing mouthpieces. Stop using any device that is cracked, damaged or difficult to clean.
