Your Guide to Different Types of Grinders

Your Guide to Different Types of Grinders

Grinders are one of the most essential steps in your smoking experience, offering an enhanced grind of your herbs for bongs, dry herb vaporizers, pipes and all of the above. So, you can finally say goodbye to sticky scissors and herbs that aren't ground finely enough.

While selecting the best grinder may seem like a no-brainer, there are a surprising number of factors and different model variations to consider.

Why Grinders are Important to Your Process

Grinding your herbs allows for the right amount of airflow through your bowl and provides a more potent and effective result, especially for medicinal uses. While there are many variations to consider when finding your next grinder, one crucial element is the importance of teeth. Teeth are the essential factor in a grinder that will cut and shred your herbs for minimal resistance and higher potency. You should always use a grinder that has either diamond-shaped teeth or extremely sharp blades to ensure a consistent grind.

Chamber Variations

2 Piece Grinders

2 piece grinders, usually referred to as 1 chamber grinders, are a basic level model and can work nugs into a soft grain. While this model offers a consistency that works for most beginners, with easier cleaning and maintenance, it doesn't contain a built-in ground flower chamber otherwise known as a kief catcher.

4 Piece Grinders

Although 3 piece chambers are available, 4 piece grinders are the most common option. The only difference between these two models is that the 3 piece doesn't have a kief catcher, and the 4 piece does. So, once your herbs are ground in the first chamber of your 4 piece, they'll move to the second, where an ultra-fine screen will sift any kief into the bottom chamber.

Types of Grinders

Many types of grinders are available, made from various materials, which all have their own benefits. While wooden, plastic and acrylic grinders are available, metal constructed options tend to be more popular as they offer a reliable and robust design.

These metal grinders are made with Stainless steel, aluminium and titanium. Titanium grinders have the sharpest teeth and are light, whereas aluminium versions offer a more affordable option but can't produce the same coarseness. Stainless steel grinders are the rarest option designed with more resilient blades and durable construction.

The Future of Grinders

There's a growing number of automatic grinders across the globe; these not only offer a more accessible and quicker use but benefit those who use herbs medicinally. However, an extensive range of medicinal uses suffers from physical illnesses. Sometimes, the delicate and fiddly work of using a grinder can become an issue, which is why there are more automatic options on the market. Some of these models even offer an automated system that pre-fills papers for you, so all you have to do is spark up. The best automated grinders are made from food grade stainless steel uni-directional blades and motors, non-stick ceramic coated parts and one touch operation for ease of use. Look for a rechargeable device to ensure a multi-use product.
